The SureColor P700 cannot be directly compared to other near-dedicated professional-grade photo printers because we do not rate them by measuring pages per minute.
Beautiful Prints of All Sorts
The ET-8550 produces simply outstanding prints, as is typical for printers in this class.
At nearly all of the font sizes we tested, the text in our tests had attractive kerning and leading (character and line spacing) and was well-shaped and very legible. At lesser sizes, the decorative fonts read a little easier and looked better than usual.
Our spreadsheets and presentations’ intricate and vibrant commercial visuals are printed with no discernible ink distribution concerns. It seems a bit silly to worry about how long it takes when you use a $900 printer that prints on expensive, sumptuous, large premium papers using nine expensive inks (and a clear coat) through a printhead with 768 nozzles per ink. Professional photo printers are slower than conventional inkjets, yet they gradually get a little quicker.
Canon assigns the Pro-300 the following print speed rating:

All can scan and copy tabloid-size documents, with the exception of the Pixma TS9520. The 50-page, single-pass, auto-duplexing ADFs of the WF-7840, WF-7820, and MFC-J6945DW are superior to the 35-sheet capacity of the OfficeJet Pro 7740’s ADF.
Contrarily, the Pixma TS9520’s manual-duplex ADF can only handle up to legal size (8.5 by 14 inches) and can only handle 20 pages at a time. Additionally, you must manually turn a stack of two-sided pages in order for the second side to be scanned.
Unlike the other ADFs mentioned here, the 35-sheet ADF on the Epson ET-16500 offers automated two-sided scanning up to tabloid size, however, it is reverse-duplexing. Single-pass ADFs simultaneously scan both sides. ADFs that support reverse duplexing scan one side, flip the paper over and then scan the other side. The reverse procedure is more difficult, requiring more steps and having more potential failure areas.
The WF-7840 has a large input capacity and exceptional paper handling. Two 250-sheet cassettes in the front and a 50-sheet multifunctional tray that pulls up and out of the back accommodate up to 550 sheets in total. The MFC-J6945DW, which has a 100-sheet multifunctional tray, is the sole rival that offers a larger paper capacity.
The Pixma TS9520 only supports 200 sheets, with 100 in the front cassette and 100 in the back tray, compared to the OfficeJet Pro 7740’s 500 sheets in two 250-sheet drawers.
The WF-7840 has a suggested monthly volume of 2,500 pages and a maximum duty cycle of 50,000 pages. This is 20,000 prints and 1,000 prints more than the MFC-J6945DW and OfficeJet Pro 7740, respectively, and 30,000 pages more than the Epson ET-16500. For its consumer-grade printers, Canon no longer releases duty cycle or suggested volume ratings.
Speedy Printing for Its Class
The WF-7840’s 25 monochrome pages per minute (ppm) rating from Epson is respectable for a midrange AIO focused on business. I put it to the test using our common Intel Core i5 testbed PC running Windows 10 Pro via an Ethernet connection. I timed it by printing a number of copies of our 12-page Microsoft Word text document for the initial testing, averaging the findings.
(Take note that I used letter-size test pages for these speed tests. The tabloid print speeds you get from multiplying the letter-size test results by two should be fairly realistic. Tabloid pages will take a little bit longer to load than super tabloid pages.)
The 12-page text document was produced by the WF-7840 at a rate of 27.5ppm on average. This is significantly faster than its predecessor, the WF-7720, the Brother MFC-J6945DW, and the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 by 13.1ppm, 7ppm, and 3.9ppm, respectively. On our simple text document test, the Pixma TS9520 from Canon only produced a measly 13.4ppm, while the ET-16500 from Epson only managed a substantially slower 4.7ppm.
Then, I timed the WF-7840 while it printed our collection of intricate and colourful test business documents. The collection includes Microsoft Excel spreadsheets with supplementary charts and graphs, Adobe Acrobat PDFs with various typefaces at mixed sizes, weights, and colours, PowerPoint handouts full of business artwork, gradient backgrounds, and a few other complex features intended to test colour printers’ capabilities.
I calculated 12ppm for printing our full collection of 26 test document pages using these scores along with the outcomes from printing the preceding 12-page text document. This score was 4.7ppm faster than the WF-7720. Additionally, it outperformed the OfficeJet Pro 7740 by 2.3ppm, the ET-16500 by 7.6ppm, the Pixma TS9520 by 7.3ppm, and was essentially equal with the MFC-J6945DW in terms of print speed.
Output with PrecisionCore
